Agios Dhometios has existed most probably since Byzantine times. It has taken its name from its patron Saint, Agios Dhometios. It is situated west of Nicosia.

Four- fifths of its land are illegally occupied by Turkish troops. After the Turkish invasion in 1974, many refugees have been moved to Agios Dhometios, living in the Agios Pavlos Refugee Settlement The Turkish invasion has brought about economic decline and desolation, which the Municipality, after its foundation in 1986, has undertaken to revert. Roads, parks and other construction plans have been realised.
The Municipality has also encouraged the people living near the Green Line to remain in their homes, by reviving these areas.

These are four churches in Agios Dhometios. The oldest one is the little church of Agios Dhometios built in the 17th Century. There is also an old church dedicated to St. Paul, built in 1805 by the Dragoman of Cyprus Hadjigeorkakis Kornesios. There is now another much bigger, church dedicated to St. George (Agios Georgios).

There are three Primary Schools in Agios Dhometios - the fourth or was closed down after the Turkish invasion in 1974, There is also a Secondary School - Agios Dhometios Gymnasium. Its original and newly-built building has since 1974 been occupied by the Turkish troops.

Agios Dhometios has its own municipal athletic centre.

Situated in Agios Dhometios is the Hippodrome, the Horse-Races Court, unique in Cyprus.
